Mccleskey find it vital to understand where the study of leadership has been in order for knowledge of leadership to grow. People have been studying leadership for over 100 years. The author presents three critical leadership theories which are Situational, transformational, and Transactional leaders. Also the author will compare and contrast these theories and points out the criticism for each theory. The article illustrates the concept of leadership development relating to the three theories. It and proposes suggestions to help move forward the academic study of leadership development and to actually implement the results of research findings on the subject to help become a better leader.

Burns defined a transformational leader as one one who raises the supporters level of awareness about the importance and value of desired outcomes and the methods of reaching those outcomes. Burns (1978) (page,141). Transformational leaders are able to pursue their followers to not prioritize their self-interest over the sake of the organization. There are four components of transformational leadership that arise and they are idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual simulation, and individualized consideration. Idealized influence is when the followers see the good qualities that the leader possesses and try emulating them. Inspirational motivation is when the leader finds a common theme that will inspire and motivates their followers through their behavior. Enthusiasm and optimism are two important attributes of inspirational motivation. Intellectual simulation is when the leader encourages his or her followers to be creative. Individualized consideration is when leaders help their followers reach their full potential by mentoring and coaching them. Transactional leadership primary concern is the exchange between leaders and followers. These exchange permit leaders to achieve their executive mission, complete required errands, keep up the current hierarchical circumstance, and propel devotees through legally binding assertion, direct conduct of adherents toward accomplishment of set up objectives, stress outward rewards, stay away from unbeneficial risks, and spotlight on enhance hierarchical
