When deciding where to go for this English culture project I had trouble deciding. I thought of all the places I could go and then it hit me. I finally thought of the one culture that seems to be the complete opposite of mine, I decided to go to China Town and experience the Chinese culture for myself. I chose to go to China town and just walk around and embrace everything around me. I would become a tourist for one day and just walk around China Town trying to get around on my own without much help. I felt if I did this I would truly become in the state of “Blindness” just like Reuven. At first I judged the topic and thought it might not work, but in the end I just decided to try it.
My eyes, my black and white eyes that see everything have been shocked with what they see. The difference from China Town and Dyker Heights is crazy. It’s as if I am in a different world. Everything around me is in a different language and for the first time in a while I feel lost. The millions of people huddling together marching down the streets as if they were penguins in a group. This hidden diverse community that has been locked away from me for so long. Everything is different here, the architecture, the people, the language, and just the atmosphere. All the buildings are jammed next to each other with neon and different colored signs everywhere, All around me I see jewelry and souvenir stores and kind old Chinese people trying to lour me into there stores. Around me I smell food that sticks in my nose and never leaves. I think in my head “why haven’t I heard of this heaven before?” As I traveled down the avenue I noticed how different the people here look and act. The women in some parts wear completely different clothing, I noticed the silk smooth dresses on most of the people, but then there were people who assimilated into the American society and wore jeans and shirts. The longer I stayed in China Town the more I felt like I was one of them. At first I felt lost and scared and hesitant and some could say “blind” but as my curiosity carried me down the streets my mind made me feel like I was one of them. As I walked down the streets I suddenly realized I hadn’t eaten lunch so I went into the nearest food place and tried my best to order. Well Honestly, this became another moment where I felt lost, right after I reassured myself I was ok. The green and red beaming sign attracted
