In Chapter 12 of To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem starts to hit puberty. He becomes moody and acts like he is above Scout. Scout isn’t exactly pleased with this new change in Jem, but when she talks to Calpurnia about it, Calpurnia says that it isn’t Jem’s fault. Scout isn’t happy, but she endures Jem. Scout then receives a letter from Dill, saying that he will not come this summer because he has a new dad and they will build a boat together. This upsets Scout, because she can’t imagine summer without Dill. Then, Atticus leaves Maycomb for a couple of weeks, and Calpurnia takes over the house.
