The Book Women of Troublesome Creek is about a 19 year old lady named Cussy Mary. She is a pack horse librarian from Troublesome Creek. She rides a mule named Junia to all of her patriots. She takes books to her patriots everyday. She really loves these books and helping people. The only problem is that she has a hard time with people because some people do not like her. Cussy Marry is blue, which makes her life very difficult. There are not many people that care about Cussy, but there are some. Most people do not like her because she is colored. There are some people that do care for her, like the little boy named Henry and Devil John. Henry is a little boy that goes to school at the school that Winnie Parker teaches. Henry gave her his food, even though he could have used it himself. He was starving and on the verge of dying and gave her probably the only thing he had to eat that day. Devil John is a moonshiner that lives tucked back in the mountains. He often wears hooves sewn on the bottom of his boots so that people do not know where he makes the moonshine. He is hesitant at first about the books Cussy brings his family because he does not like that all of his children and even his wife spend more time reading than they do doing their chores. Cussy explains to him that there are many kinds of books that his family can read and he gets churros. She shows him some really cool books and he decides it will be ok for her to drop off the books every so often. She goes to drop off some books to him and he gives her a jar of moonshine. (230) He could have used the money from the pint of moonshine he gave to her, but instead he gave it to her for free because he could see she was having a rough day.
