Different Types of Graphic File Formats
Format Typical Use
Bitmap/Vector Features Limitations
JPEG
Taking a photograph which saves it as a bitmap • Very small file size making them very useful for using on the internet
• JPEG’s are supported by a large range of software
• It has the capability of using 16.7 million different colours, meaning that you can have images that are high detail. • It uses lossy compression meaning that some data is lost when compressing the file.
• It does not support transparency, which may be needed when making a logo meaning that this file type will not be able to be used.
• The files loses its quality after repeat saves of the file.
BMP
High quality photo editing / images • Lossless compressions meaning that when you compress the image no data is lost from the image.
• It has support for over 4 billion colours • The file size is very large making it difficult to use when on the internet due to file size restrictions, and loading times of a webpage using a BMP file is quite large
