Data Protection Act 1998:
The Data Protection Act 1998 is a legalisation that many businesses store and use information about people in this case it would be Tesco costumers. The Data Protection Act protects information held about people from being misused. Tesco costumers who give the company their information such as their address and email receive vouchers or promotional offers are stored in their database. The information stored in the database of Tesco must be obtained fairly, only to be used for the purpose it was first collected, not kept longer than needed, accurate and up to date and etc. Tesco has to do their best to always make sure that the date they obtain of their costumers is not misused and given out to different companies as this is against the Data Protection Act 1998 and if it does the costumers can sue the company for misusing their information they gave to Tesco.
The Freedom of information Act 2000:
The Freedom of information Act 2000 provides individual or organisations like Tesco with the right to request information held by a public authority. The public authority must tell the individual or company whether it holds the information, which it must give in 20 working days and the information has to be given in the asked format by the company. So this act means that Tesco has every right to know information that the government might hold about their company or even economic policies that can affect Tesco or already have. This can also apply to Tesco costumers as they have every right to know what kind of information they hold about him. The Computer Misuse Act
Lastly, The Computer Misuse Act is a law in the UK that legislates against certain activity’s using computers such as hacking into others people computers and databases also misusing software or helping a person to gain access to protected files on someone else computers. Computer Misuse act can lead to imprisonment for at least 6 month and a fine. Tesco have to make sure that their database is protected and no one can access their files and database of their costumers as the hackers can leak information to their competitors or even the media to ruin the reputation of Tesco
Ethical issues:
The use of email, many companies like Tesco today have a code of practice on the correct use of email. This means that Tesco only can send out appropriate business emails to costumers or even fellow employees. This is a good ethical way of using emails like sending unnecessary promotional offers to customers who don’t even shop at Tesco.
The use of Internet in many companies also have a code of practice on internet and what their employees can and cannot use the internet for. Tesco might not let employee’s access social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram whilst at work because the employees might say comments regarding to Tesco and the company might find this inappropriate and unacceptable.
Whilst Blowing is when an employee who raises a concern about a business practice either to manager in Tesco within the company or to the press. The concern may relate to fraud, crime, danger or any other serious risk that could impact on costumers, colleagues or any other stakeholders of Tesco PL. Tesco needs to prevent this and make sure there are no concerns and if there are they have to make sure that it stays within the company.
