Many veterans face homelessness once they return from overseas, studies show. 23% of homeless individuals are veterans. The article states “Those who served were often treated as traitors instead of heroes and found it difficult to adjust to life back home” (“Oklahomans and the Vietnam War”). This personal experience shows how veterans during that time were treated as outsiders and even with that they still had psychological issues and PTSD which made it even harder to transition back to normal life. Another study said, “many veterans bore the brunt of this public frustration and outrage and were treated with coldness or outright hostility upon returning home” (“Veteran Experiences: Vietnam Veterans”). This study shows how Vietnam veterans who didn't even start the war, they just fought in it, were mistreated and treated with disrespect and hostility. In a study that says, “the trauma of combat, many believe that the isolation caused by the war, as well as the critical treatment soldiers received upon returning, may have contributed to PTSD among Vietnam veterans” (“Veteran Experiences: Vietnam Veterans”). This study shows how the war and the people have affected the mental stability of our veterans and how they never received the help and appreciation they deserved. In the history of the United States, our veterans have been mistreated and overlooked and need to be honored and receive more assistance once they return
