In my research I found many similarities in Virtue Theory, Uliltarism and Deontological Ethics. According to Dictionary.com Virtue Theory is the belief that the person displays moral excellence, goodness and righteousness. Utilitarianism is the belief that virtue is based on utility and that conduct should be directed promoting the greatest happiness on the greatest number of persons, and Deontological Ethics is a branch of ethics that deals with the right action and nature of duty (dictionary.com). It seems that all of these lead to making people happy. It seems that each one of the branches has the duty to make everyone happy by themselves.
The differences between Deontological Ethics and Virtue theory is that Deontology addresses that if action is right and it is in accordance with a moral rule or principle. Virtue Theory says that an action is right if it is what a virtuous agent would do in the circumstances. Compared to Virtue Theory these two show what should be done in certain situations, Virtue Theory is that you develop ethical habits, compared to Utilitarianism is that the person only looks at how can I get what I want and what is good. Deontological Ethics looks at how someone determines what is right and wrong and one must act purely from duty (Olson, R. Deontological Ethics, 1967).
