This all started when Rosa Parks a 43 year old African American refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She was booked for breaking the law and spent the night in jail. As a result, King helped organize a boycott of the public transportation system in Montgomery. He was elected to lead the boycott as he was a young, well-trained man who had solid family connections and also had professional standing. It lasted for over a year and became tense at times.
