Even though, the issue of colleges accommodating students with learning disabilities have not fully been accomplished; many colleges have gone too far to the extent of supporting the student with learning difficulties have a better experience throughout their college life. According to the disability resource center of America, a learning disability is not just a mental retardation or emotional disorder, but rather is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s functions in receiving, processing, analyzing, and saving information. People with learning disabilities have difficulty learning in a typical manner. Regardless of the reasons, learning disability might impact the person’s skills in reading, writing, and spelling, listening, speaking, …show more content…
Then again, Faculty and staff are focused on helping disability students with extraordinary inabilities to adjust in a new environment, as well as exceed expectations like every student who chooses to enroll. l. According to Melissa Felder’s article “How Yale supports students with disabilities” published in the Chronicle of Higher Education on November 6, 2011, indicated that Yale University has showered love on students with learning disability. Even though, the university’s treatment towards dyslexia students are not perfect; they are part of some of the colleges that have supported students with learning disabilities. The article also emphasized that tutors have implemented strategies for assisting students in many ways. Instructors make sure that students who are victims of disabilities such as dyslexia are given much attention in the classrooms. For instance, they provide lodging caretakers and in-class assistance, they have individual study rooms for active programs and classes, and mobility support and tutoring help, as well as giving more time during exams. This process adopted by the college will help disability students to be at the same pace as every other student and also progress in their academics. Many colleges have offered clinics in their schools so that physically challenged students will have the opportunity to visit the school nurse or doctor for medications. Many colleges have a health program that they undergo which requires a disabled student health care plan from their parents or guardian. Many students have health issues, which if not properly managed can lead them not to attend school properly or dropped out from school. Rachel Adams in her article “Bringing down the barriers seen and unseen” published onNovember 6, 2011, emphasized that it is important to see to the safety of a campus. Therefore, it is important for colleges to educate its staff on how to control students suffering from a psychiatric disability. Such students can be a threat to other students. Health effective program that are held in colleges helps colleges to be aware of the health conditions of their students, those that need medical attention and identify the safety measures that they may use in times of emergencies. This system will protect them from activities that might put them at risk. Furthermore, many colleges have also had other useful programs where students and their families are allowed to point out their views on issues affecting their studies, or they.
