“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”, quotes Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the most celebrated artist and intellectual of the Italian Renaissance. Being widely known to be a possessor of a curious mind and sharp intellect, his impressive works were those of a maestro. His devoted study of the laws of science and nature made him a capable painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer and draftsman.
Leonardo believed that sign was mankind’s most important sense and eyes were the most crucial organs. He stressed on the importance of ’saper vedere’- knowing how to see. It was his strong belief that the accumulation of direct knowledge and facts through observation.

The Revolving Bridge
Da Vinci’s invention, the revolving bridge was designed for Duke Sforza. The bridge could be easily packed up and transported by armies on the move to cross water bodies on their way. The bridge was designed to easily swing across a stream and set up on the other side for armies to cross with little or no trouble. The device was also equipped with a counterweight tank for effectively balancing the weight of the soldiers.
Da Vinci has described this bridge as being ‘light yet rugged’ and it was one of the many bridges Da Vinci designed in the Duke’s lifetime. He made other temporary strong bridges that were easy to construct and could be functional across many rivers. His smartly engineered devices helped armies to navigate across unfamiliar terrains with less difficulty and protect them from impending forces during war.
