Many early colonist in Jamestown died due to the harsh environment, horrible relations with natives, and lack of skills.
One of the reasons they died was because many early colonist died because of their water supply. The rivers by Jamestown was sometimes mixed with salt water and filled with disease from the feces dumped into the river. Colonist soon became more exposed to saltwater and a drought after digging shallow holes in search of water. According to document A “English colonist dug shallow wells to supply themselves with sources of drinking water...disease in the early years to Jamestown position at the salt-freshwater transition, where filth introduced into the tended to fester rather than flush away”. They were many people but not all of them had contributing jobs. There was one surgeon so that meant that if he died more people who needed help will die. Only one person had the job of a gunsmith so if there was one person making all the weapons to fight off the Indians. According to document E “2 die in first Indian attack on Fort James...At least 3 more die in Indian ambushes” .Most of the colonist didn’t work at all so that brung the colony even further down. This is all shown in the chart of how many people were at jamestown when it first was discovered and what were their jobs. There also was only one person who had the job of an sailor so if passed away people might have been stranded or someone with no experience could have tried to drive the boat and killed people.11 colonist were actually killed due to a boating accident.
