The Wilms Tumor is a type of disorder that is able to affect young children, usually around the age of 3-4. This disorder is the fourth most common cancer a child could have. An adult with this type of disorder is very rare to occur. The main cause of the Wilms tumor is the deletion of chromosome number eleven, meaning a tiny part of the chromosome is missing. Some signs of this disorder can be spotted or being able to be felt. In some cases, it can be felt on both sides of the stomach and it can be able to feel firm. There are physical abnormalities the person with this disorder can have such as: Hemihypertrophy, which is a condition where either side of your body is not equivalent to the other side of your body. Aniridia, another type of unique condition where the iris, which is the color part of the eye is either not formed or just partially formed. Since there are 5 different stages of the Wilms Tumor, the percentages will be different from each other. At stage 1, the percentage of people at this stage is approximately 40-45 percent. The two types of surgeries used are Partial Nephrectomy and Radical Nephrectomy. Partial Nephrectomy is when the surgeon will remove the tumor and surrounding the tumor parts of the tissue that’s healthy and they’ll leave as much kidney as possible. Radical Nephrectomy is when the surgeon removes the entire kidney and some of the tissue surrounding the kidney. Another way of treatment is by doing Chemotherapy, which is using drugs and being able to wipe out the cancer cells and being able to slow down the cancer cells from dividing. Ninety percent of children are getting treated due to surgery, chemotherapy and even radiation therapy. Although the Wilms tumor cannot be prevented, it can be treated if caught early
