What were the beliefs and attitudes about witches and witchcraft held by many people in the New England colonies in the late seventeenth century? What characteristics did witches supposedly manifest? How were they identified? How were they punished?

Most people held fear of witches, thinking them to be evil followers of satan. They were usually women, along with having scars, moles, or birthmarks. They were identified through stabbing to see if the screamed or showed blood, if they didn’t they were a witch, if they were muttering to themselves, if they had pets along with other things. They were punished by hanging.
