In the late 1960s, the state of California went through a stage of turmoil due to the killing of innocent people. The killings were proclaimed to be committed by an unknown suspect that the police named as the Zodiac Killer. In the first murder of the movie, the Zodiac Killer murdered Darlene Ferrin and attempted to murder her acquaintance, Mike Mageau. After this murder, the Vallejo Police Department received a call from a man who told them the whereabouts of the murder. Once the police arrived to the scene, they found Farrin dead and Mageau badly wounded. Once Mageau was released from the hospital, the police discovered that he had seen the Zodiac Killer’s face, but they never brought him in to identify the killer’s face. During the questioning, they found out that Allen wore military boots, had a zodiac watch, and that he was ambidextrous. This leads the Vallejo Police Department to make Lee their prime suspect, but they only had circumstantial evidence. Dave Toschi knew Arthur Leigh Allen was indeed the Zodiac Killer, but he did not have the solid evidence to actually prove it. Several years went by and the Vallejo Police Department initially gave up on the case. Robert Graysmith took matters into his own hands and decided to reach out to one of Darlene’s old friends. The friend admitted that Darlene was acquainted with this strange man that went by his nickname. Graysmith learned that the man that she was talking about being Arthur Leigh Allen, the prime suspect in the case. This leads the Vallejo Police Department to finally bring in Mike Mageau to identify the man who murdered Darlene Farrin and attempted to murder him. He confirmed that Arthur Leigh Allen was indeed the man who he saw that night at the murder scene.
