Biology Of Race Your Name: Marcy Jimenez

Please provide short (one to several paragraph) answers to the following questions based on the material in this case study. Submit the file named as YourlastnameRace.rtf, .docx or similar.

1) List the different races you would recognize.
The different races that I would recognize within are community is the Hispanics, Caucasians, African- Americans, and the Asian people and also Arabic.

2) Identify which characteristics you used to sort people into these races.
The characteristics that I used are their skin color and there facial
Features and if they speak with an accent or not. Usually looking at a person you kind of tell where there from. But then on the other hand you cannot.

3) How aware would you say you are of your own biases? How aware are you of the science behind race and racism? I am much aware of my attitude toward different races and even though we all have prejudices within ourselves I am not racist. I love people from all races this is the way I was taught by both parents of mine. My father is an immigrant from Guadalajara Mexico. It’s really hard to tell the many genetic differences involving science, race, and racism.

4) Did your IAT results surprise you? Explain. I might have not done this test right because I got back too many errors to determine a result. I clicked in the first question part. Then they began to show me all kinds of faces of people I think I just got confused.

5) Some scientists do not think race is a biological feature of the human species. They base their rejection of the concept on what actual evidence? These scientists base their evidence on how evolution adapted people color of skin to the environment where they lived in based on Jablonski’s theory. This would mean what we are seeing is not race or superiority but how much our skin adapted to the environment which our ancestors lived in to be able to get vitamin D. Also the American Anthropological Association says that 94 % of physical variation lies within so-called racial groups and the difference is only 6 % in the genes of the racial groups.

6) Some scientists believe that race is biological. How do they define races? (On what specific basis do they claim to be able to identify races?) The scientists that believe race is biological identified race as a suite of genes correspond to geographic regions. They would be able to identify the specific race by their skin color, hair type, and eye shape.

7) We are a race conscious society, but we explicitly prohibit discrimination based on race. Would it be a good idea to completely ban race considerations as far as college admissions, hiring, etc.? Might there be some value in considering race for some purposes? Interesting question Dr. Plotkin, but we all know that certain races have priorities in certain colleges/universities. The reason behind this is the person’s race. Certain schools only accept specific races even if they do not want to say so; that is how it is today.
