1. What is the story of Scheherazade about? Where does the story take place?

The story of Scheherazade is named One Thousand and One Nights. This story is about a strong and intelligent girl named Scheherazade and the Sultan, which she is wedded to. The Sultan would marry a new girl every day and order them to be beheaded. Scheherazade decided to change her fate by telling the Sultan stories. She continued to share her stories with the King who was so mesmerized he decided to make her his queen. The story takes place in the ancient land of Persia.

Tubas and trombones expressed the Sultan in the story. The last moments of the suite, the two themes come together for the first and only time as the Sultan realized he is in love with Scheherazade.

3. How is the character Scheherazade reflected in the music?

The character Scheherazade is reflected by a gorgeous refrain consistently heard in the high register of a single violin, often with the company of harps. Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov identified these instruments with Scheherazade narrating each of her fanciful tales to conquer the Sultan.

4. The activity discusses how Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the composer, wanted to create music that told stories. Do you think he was successful in Scheherazade? Why or why not?

I absolutely thought Rimsky-Korsakov was successful in Scheherazade considering the piece was beautifully composed. The way Rimsky-Korsakov used different instruments, such as bassoons, violins, trombones, and tubes. He also used different tempos and melodies, which in my opinion made the story.

5. What are your impressions of Scheherazade? Did you like or dislike the music?
