Transitions can have a big impact on children and young people’s lives. One of the transitions every child will pass through is starting nursery and school, this can be a very big and scary thing for young children. When starting school children might fear they wont have any friends or that no one will like them, they can become anxious and not want to go. Most children will cry on their first day but are fine after a little while after they’ve had chance to settle in. its often harder for older children when they have the transition to move to secondary school because there are concerns with bullying, being discriminated against, the worries of homework and exams etc. which will all affect a young person negatively. However, some children might take a big longer getting used to a new setting other from home. They may not settle at all and just scream and cry all day because they are not used to being without their parents and being around new people. In my setting, in the nursery we offer 2-3 phasing in sessions for children to get used to the staff and environment, on the first setting mum or dad will stay in the room and on the second session mum or dad will wait outside the room so they are out of sight and on the third session mum or dad will leave the setting completely. Having these phasing in sessions gives children the opportunity to get used to the staff and children and also the environment. Another transition which has a big impact on young people is puberty, puberty is an expected transition which every young person will experience, puberty is the physical change in a young person’s body. Young people are all different and will experience puberty at different ages, some could be very young 11-12 years old or some could be quite late experiencing puberty at 16-17 years
