1.) How did the students in the class appear to feel about the teacher? What were some of the ways in which they showed their feelings during the class, both verbally and non-verbally? The feelings exhibited by the students were anxiety, frustration and tension, which were brought about by teacher. The teacher played the role of a drill sergeant asking the students to answer his questions. As a result the pressure affected their ability to work. The students appeared to be confused, frustrated and anxious throughout the lesson. The students went from responding to the teacher, to becoming withdrawn and eventually giving up when unable to answer the question. There was a brief moment of tension between the teacher and Carolyn when she did not respond to the question. The teacher played the absolute authority figure in the classroom and as a result the students were not fully engaged. The teacher had a preconceived notion that the students were well equipped to answer the questions, but the students needed time to process the information given. This often resulted in students staring directly at the lesson booklet and rushing to get the answer out. During the questioning portion students became anxious and withdrawn from the teacher. In order to decode a paragraph they had to use their prior knowledge of vocabulary words. Secondly, they were given a sample passage with nonsense words and were expected to use their reading comprehension abilities to answer the questions given by the teacher. One example shown is the teacher reading the nonsense passage and asking the students “when did the story take place?” the student responded “last serny” without any idea what the story was about. This showed that students did not need to understand the story to answer the questions; the only prerequisite was background knowledge
