First off, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. The 13th Amendment banned slavery. The 14th Amendment says that anyone born in the US is a legal citizen. The 15th Amendment allows any male to vote regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
But we’ve found that in the South, they’re fighting against the 15th Amendment. Poll taxes cannot be paid by African Americans due to sharecropping. Literacy tests cannot be passed without having previous education. The Grandfather Clause ensures that if your grandfather could vote then you can, thus exempting African Americans as they are the first free generation.
