From October 12-14, 2012, Catholics from all around the state gathered at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey for the first Eucharistic Congress in the Diocese of Trenton. Over the three-day weekend, events, such as question and answer sessions, Christian rock music concerts, a service of remembrance for veterans, and masses occurred. 7,000 students, which included 7th to 12th graders from parishes and Catholic schools, attended the youth mass on Friday. In addition, the students discussed how God’s presence played an important role in their lives. The event coincided with The Year of Faith, proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI and began on October 11, 2012 and concluded on November 24, 2013, encouraged and gave Catholics the opportunity to renew their faith and seek a deeper relationship with God. The readings for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time focused on the theme of constantly remaining and believing in God in order to live with Him forever in heaven. In the Bishop’s homily, he inspired and urged his people to never stop spreading their faith because everyone will always belong with God. Moreover, if we do love God, we must not get attached to material items and treat others with disrespect. The most important part of the mass was when Bishop O’Connell celebrated the Sacrament of the Eucharist with the whole venue and all of the Catholics processed to receive the Body of Christ.
