It was once a disgrace to be pregnant as a teenager, especially before marriage. When a girl would become pregnant, it was usually by accident, or it was assumed the girl was raped. Today, it is almost expected that a large amount of young girls will get pregnant in high school. Some even try to get pregnant. A show called 16 and Pregnant aired in June 2009, in an effort to peek into the lives of girls around the age of sixteen during their last few weeks of pregnancy and a short time into the baby's life. The show is supposed to discourage girls from getting pregnant and encourage safe sex, but some people are disturbed that the girls are being paid big bucks per episode and have a fan base the size of some of the most famous celebrities. The TV show has incredible ratings, but is it really serving its purpose? Although some people do not take in the information the show 16 and Pregnant provides, the show has a positive effect on our community.
The TV show 16 and Pregnant was created to discourage teen pregnancy and encourage safe sex. Each episode is about a different girl living under different circumstances and the ages of the girls vary from fifteen to eighteen.
