In the period from 1865 to 1900, technology, government policy, and economic conditions steered American agriculture into a downwards spiral politically, industrially, and economically. During this time period, governments favored big businesses, and although technology was improving the improvements were primarily in the field of urban manufacturing, or too expensive for many farmers to afford. Economically speaking, the majority of farmers were living in poor conditions due to the decline of agriculture prices. Politically, the poor farmers did not have much power in comparison to the wealthy industrialists. As a result of the political, industrial, and economic troubles farmers faced, American agriculture suffered during this time period.
