The 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry had two different regiments under its name. The first regiment was employed for three months. From May 29, 1861 to August 28, 1861. The companies contained men from all around the states. Company A, B, and E came out of Ironton OH, company B came out of Marietta OH, company D came out of McArthur OH, company F came out of Gallipolis OH, company I came out of Jackson OH, and finally company K came out of Beverly OH. They were all organized at Parkersburg, Virginia. They were under the leadership of Colonel Timothy R. Stanley. The whole reason why the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry exist was because of Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers. They fought in five battles;
Battle of Stone River: December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863
Tullahoma Campaign June 23 to July 3, 1863
Battle 0f Chickamauga September 18 to September 20, 1863
Siege of Chattanooga November 23 to November 25, 1863
Battle of of Missionary Ridge November 25, 1863
The regiment did not suffer major casualties in any particular battle. But the regiment did in fact have several casualties throughout their employment. In total they lost one hundred and eighty four men. They lost 4 officers, 72 enlisted men, 1 officer, and 107 men. There really is no information that could be found on whether or not the men received any type of rewards or acts of heroism but there is one really cool fact. There was a sergeon that was on board with the the 18th regiment. After his service in the war he went on to help in the creation of the Athens Insane Assylum. His name was William Parker Johnson.
