I support the thesis that the years 1914-1945 were comprised as one single European conflict because no matter if you’re a nation on the brinks of total war or a middle school clique of preteen girls, there comes a point where other people’s problems becomes everyone’s problems. More than almost any preceding conflicts in European history, 1914 was the start of a series of wars that broke out all over Europe. It began with the Austrian declaration of war on Serbia in July of 1914 and ended with the surrender of Germany in 1945. Conflicts like the rise of Mussolini and The National Fascist Party in Italy, which made countries like Yugoslavia and Greece very nervous about Mussolini and his vision of an Italian-based empire much like the Roman Empire. The Red Army gained full control in Russia during this time and through military force, the new Soviet government applied communist ideology to the population that was already hesitant of socialism, which resulted in the death of millions, and industry essentially came to a sudden stop. Also in Russia, Joseph Stalin became the new Head of State after Lenin, which would lead to the confiscation of grain in the USSR portions of Ukraine and Turkey resulting in mass starvation, deportations, political imprisonment and executions. Moreover, there was the change from constitutional monarchy to a dictatorship that happened the Balkans mostly due in part by religious struggles. I could go on but as we look at those few examples, it’s clear that maybe some countries saw some relative peace during this time, however, conflicts and tension still lingered between states and when you let tension grow the result is not positive.
