Fashion changes over time, but have you ever wonder how it has changed after the Wolrd War II? The United States entered the World War II and women power again was in demand, Paris fell to German, the introduction of the New Look, are the main reasons that made the 1940s fashion industry be memorable.
1940s Political, Historical, and Social Events
In December 1941 the United States officially entered WWII after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There had been a debate about and opposition to using women in the armed forces. As men went off to battle, women were needed for non-combat jobs such as switchboard operators, telegraphers, mechanics, and drivers. In February of 1947, Christian Dior introduced his new collection of women’s clothes called the New Look. It was a style that shocked and outraged some and thrilled others. These clothes were considered very unfeminine, but the women got used to them and continued to wear them in public. Another thing women always wore: gloves. Preferably a pair that matches with their outfit. Fur was very popular, as were animal skins. Crocodile purses, wombat collars, lambskin lining, and leather sleeves — no animal was off limits. Clothes in the 1940s were very bright and colorful. The brighter the better. Women’s shoes were often one of three popular color choices: red, white or blue. The clothing worn by common people was also impacted by the war. Military demands for fabric, especially for use in uniforms, tents, and parachutes, meant that many countries used some form of rationing or limiting fabric and clothing. Clothes makers altered the styles of clothes they made in order to use less fabric: hemlines became shorter,trousers and skirts were closer fitting, and fabric-wasting flourishes such as patch pockets
