An Alarming Society A world based on hate is an unpleasant vision. In the book 1984 written by George Orwell, there are two conflicting characters, O’Brien and Winston. Winston believes a society based on hate, “would have no vitality. It would disintegrate. It would commit suicide.” (Orwell 231). However, O’Brien says,“ old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world, there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement” (Orwell 230). O’Brien implies old civilizations, that are based on love, eventually disappear. A society based on hate is not just a fictional idea but a real phenomenon that has occurred in the past and in the present. A society can survive on hate in the future as long as the leader can alter history. Changing history can affect a society enormously. Many students today are required to study history, which allows people to have a sense of identity and it improves their decision making. Nazi rose to power with Adolf Hitler skill of persuading citizens to have a common hatred towards anyone who is a White Jew. Citizens did not question the morals involved with the persecution and genocide of the Jews.
