We are being watched and monitored every day; from talking on the phone to even our vacations. In the novel 1984, the Party has telescreens that monitor and observe the people without their consent. Our modern American government is taking control of our privacy with our cell phones, computers, and other technical devices. The American people have ignored the fact the government is taking away privacy and relinquishing freedom with some of the population condoning being watched over for safety concerns. The telescreen in 1984 listened and viewed Winston in his home. “Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard”(Orwell, 3). This was near a state of war with the U.S. so the workers were accepting the tight security procedures. I agree with Orwell’s predications as the “WAR IS PEACE”(Orwell, 4) is true. Citizens will give up their power to be protected. This is another example of a step before the prediction of 1984 being at a constant state of war would cause tight security and monitoring all the time. With two diffrent points of veiw and all the information, I agree with Orwell as modern America has direct characteristics of 1984. From the younger teenage college citizen to the older mature citzen, both agree on leaving power to the government. Altough the security threat isnt immediate, being controlled and having the thought of being safe and secure are their choice like many others. “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”(Orwell, 4). The Party uses this propaganda to give the allusion of keeping the people safe. Without knowing the isssues and problems, their will be no problems with the Party.
