Living in a nightmare that we cannot wake up from. This is how I would describe the world of 1984 if we had to live in it ourselves. The book “1984” by George Orwell describes the journey of a man named Winston Smith in the dystopian world Orwell predicted could come. I will speak about the three most important parts of understanding the book; the historical background, storyline of the book, and deeper meaning of the story.
A key piece to understanding and truly knowing the book “1984”, is knowing the historical background of it. The book was originally published in 1949 and takes place in Great Britain. During this time in the real world Britain and the rest of Europe was ravaged by World War Two and was only starting to recover with the help of the Marshall Plan. An equally important event that was happening at the same time was the dropping of the Iron Curtain over Eastern Europe by the totalitarian dictator Stalin of the U.S.S.R. After Orwell had saw Western civilization destroy itself by a fascist dictator, and the Eastern civilization in impoverished ruins by communism, he wrote 1984 as a warning to people of the dangers of being submissive and losing your freedom.

The story was written in a time of technological advances and mass warfare with killing on an unforeseen scale.The book was written as a warning to the world of the dangers of fascism. The total control of the dictatorship in the story shows how little the people have left. It warns of the poverty that comes from the total control economic style of Communism, and the stresses it can create. It also warns of the dangers of complacency and appeasement, which were a major problem of the time. Above all this book warned of the losing of our freedoms. We were shown to hold on to them and to fight for them, because even if we have nothing we still have
