Teachers being taught, Cops getting arrested, Eagles representing freedom. There are many examples of irony in the novel 1984. The novel contains enough information of what you expected but it was opposite of what you thought. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell has many descriptions of the society which is very controlled in almost every sense. Orwell uses lots of literary devices such as irony and imagery. The imagery is very vivid in this book. Irony is explained a lot such as, war is peace; ignorance is strength; and freedom is slavery. The irony used in this novel is incredibly powerful to its meaning as it takes on the numerous acts of war. An example of this is, “War is peace; Freedom is slavery; and Ignorance is strength” (Orwell 16).
