According to Police Chief Jim McDonnell, the city of Long Beach is planning to install surveillance cameras throughout the area in order to “respond to crimes better and prevent other crimes”. This is similar to the telescreens in the novel 1984, however the novel’s dystopian world has many unrealistic characteristics that are simply impossible in our world today. One must remember, the United States isn’t Oceania and we aren’t being constantly watched by “thought police” under the control of a totalitarian regime. George Orwell’s novel 1984 is a dystopian novel that can’t easily be compared to our modern world. Proles in Oceania are watched so constantly that they fear free thought, "Your worst enemy, he reflected, was your own nervous system. At any moment the tension inside you was liable to translate itself into some visible symptom” (Orwell 64). Being constantly watched by Big Brother, the people of Oceania are so brainwashed into party loyalty that they aren’t allowed to think freely.
