When there is positivity and good in this world, there is a feeling of slight happiness and calmness. It is the type of satisfactory feeling that makes you feel proud and confident in what you are doing. It boosts the emotions to a happier state causing someone to either recover from stressful situations, communicating or just having a better all moods, especially when it comes to love. However good cannot exist without the bad. For instance love and enmity will always be complete opposites. The negativity in anything will always follow positivity no matter how much it is avoided. One will always outshine the other, which is why; in life everything needs to be balanced. The party has many ways in which they control society, one of those ways being Doublethink. Doublethink is when two contradictory opinions about something thought of at the same time and not knowing which opinion to express. Doublethink is introduced at the very beginning of the book with the party slogan (WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH).(Pg. 4) This method of control is used so that the people do not know what is real or fake, good or bad, and makes you overthink something simple. This allows the party to use Big Brother as a sign of hope and Goldstein as a sign of pessimism. Nobody knows if Big Brother or Goldstein really exists, however the society believes that they exist and do not exist at the same time not knowing which one to actually believe in. With the society thinking like this, they have the power to make the people think of anything they crave. For example the party has posters of Big Brother around the country with the words “Big Brother is watching you” underneath his picture.
