Using Physical and Mental Abuse to Break and Rebuild the People of Oceania One of the recurring major ideas throughout the Part Three of 1984 revolves around the party physically and mentally abusing the captured rebels. At one point, in the novel O'Brien says this while he tortures Winston, “That was forty. You can see that the numbers on this dial run up to a hundred… I have it in my power to inflict pain on you at any moment and to whatever degree I choose” (245). Essentially, O’Brien is using his power over Winston to pick and pull information that still lingers in Winston's head in order to shape and mold him from rebel to Big Brother supporter. O’Brien knew from the start that Winston was planning against Big Brother and he had all the evidence to do what he wanted with him.
