In the dictatorial society of Oceania, citizens are captivated by an autocratic government. 1984 is a commentary for the upcoming of what society could become if dictatorship is permitted to attain power. Although one might argue that autocracy is the best type of government for citizens, an analysis of fear being created through propaganda, strict laws and ceaseless surveillances in 1984, by George Orwell, will show the negatives of obtaining an autocratic government in society.

Citizens are forbidden from leaving their homes late at night. Even though these rules are spread everywhere in Oceania, they are not considered laws because there are no written laws in 1984, but this is the root cause of fear, as citizens are living in distrust. The author states, “And yet it was a fact that if Syme grasped, even for three seconds, the nature of his, Winston’s, secret opinions, he would betray him instantly to the Thought Police” (Orwell, 71). This passage indicates a new and interesting crime known as, “thoughtcrime.” Citizens can be guilty for thoughtcrime if they are caught hesitating to speak or if their facial expressions express hesitation in front of the “thought police.” Considering the fact that there are no authorized laws, the Party has the power to modify and regulate the severity of laws however they want. A similar incident has occurred in society a few years ago. NSA contractor, Edward Snowden, was charged for leaking confidential information about internet and phone surveillance by American intelligence. Edward Snowden was punished for his crime and ever since he has been carefully watched by the US government. Also, if any matter related to the NSA comes in the news the first person that the US will target and doubt is Edward. Edward can be caught guilty for a leaking crime even if he hasn’t done anything.
