The beginning of 1984, the setting is Winston walking to his apartment, called “Victory mansions.” Victory mansions, does not live up to its name. The way victory mansions are described in the book, doesn’t match up with the name. He described the smell of victory mansions, as rotten cabbage and had old rag mats. Winston’s apartment/flat was on seventh floor. Winston doesn’t know his age. He guesses that he is 39. He has a varicose ulcer, and it made it hard for him to climb up the stairs to his flat. When Winston was climbing up the stairs to his flat, there was a big poster and had the words, “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”, underneath it.
