“He galanced at the shovel. It wasn’t defective he was defective,” This is what Stanley thinks of himself at the beginning of the book . Stanley has different characteristics that define him at the beginning ,and the end of the book,and through the influence of Zero’s friendship, Stanley changes from depressed and unconfident to happy and confident. At the beginning of the novel, Stanley is depressed and unconfident. Stanley’s hero Clyde Livingston thinks he’s the worst person in the world. When he states,”He couldn’t imagine what kind of horrible person would steal from homeless children,”(Sacher,23) Stanley became depressed when his hero called him a horrible person. A kid who was much smaller than Stanley was able to pick on him,”Back at school, a bully named Derrick Dunne used to torment Stanley the teachers never took Stanley’s complaints serious,because Derrick was so much smaller than Stanley,”(Sacher,23) Stanley was unconfident sense he never had the guts to stand up to himself. Zero demonstrated bravery when he stood up to Mr.Pendanski, “Zero took the shovel, then he swung it like a baseball bat. The metal blade smashed across Mr.Pendanski face,”(Sacher 139), Stanley learned from Zero’s bravery by standing up for himself. Stanley is questioning himself after Zero ran away, he is wondering is it too late? “Once again he considered going out on the lake to look for him, but he began to realize that it was too late,” (Sacher,143) Stanley was doubting the fact that Zero might still be alive.
