Social issues tend to never go away, they simmer on the back burner until the issue feels the need to arise again. The social issues that were peaking in the early 19th century are peaking again in the 21st century. Although both are two different eras both have similar issues such as poverty, education, racial discrimination, human rights. Racial discrimination amongst colored people was a major social issue through out the nineteenth century, though it has gone on long before. In “February 3, 1869” coloured men had gained the right to legally vote in the United States polls. When immigrants came over by the boat loads, it caused a “over population, and “infrastructures were tested to the max” . Due to the overpopulation lack of “housing and jobs” erupted through cities causing people to be homeless and not being able to support their family. Not only did it put them on the streets but it lead to people stealing and breaking and entering to houses, in order to gain a sort of money source. Though soon the social gospel came about to “better the lives of the poor” , to get them off the streets and stop breaking and entering to homes in order to make money. The social gospel donated millions of dollars to better people living in poverty; it made “schools, housing and hospitals” . Though social gospels were put into play there was still an overpowering amount of immigrants coming into America. The gospel had started to decline after World War 1 due to the neo-orthodoxy. But come the “late 1960’s” food banks founded by “Van Hengel” had started to arise in America aiding those in need of food. Then quickly 18 food banks were made in the nation by 1977, soon food bans were in every state across North America. But following food banks the nation had started to aide the poor with places to sleep, “beginning in 1983” . The shelters not only give the homeless places to sleep, but they also give them places to go and take a shower. But the shelters don’t only just give them places to stay, they also help get them back on there feet unlike in the gilded age just to sleep.
