The 1st Amendment’s Free Speech clause requires school districts to weigh and balance the need for a safe school environment and the American entitlement to speak or engage in expression. But this clause changes at schools because students are minors, adults are employees and a classroom is a peaceful environment. Therefore, many schools ban hate speech, which negatively targets people based on personal traits like religion or race. Though spiteful hate speech towards others should be limited, it should not be able to limit the opportunity to mentally challenge one another.
