Food is a form of a nourishing substance that can be consumed and will provide nourishment for the individual. Food is a source of nutrient which could be carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins or minerals. It is usually in the form of a solid substance that an individual will eat in order for them to gain energy to do certain activities and stay alive. (Biology – online.org, 2015). Food can also come in the form of a liquid and can be taken into the body by mouth, by tube or even directly into the veins for those individuals who are not able to feed by mouth because of an ill health or health issues which does not allow them to eat or drink normally. (Stretch & Whitehouse, 2010). Food is special to the body and it is vital that individuals consume food because it makes the body work, grow and repair itself and the kinds of food that an individual will eat will affect the efficiency of the processes. Diet refers to a food and drink that is regularly consumed by an individual and includes all of the meals, snacks and drinks that an individual will have. (Merriam-Webster.com, 2015). Diet can also be used to refer to the deliberate selection of foods in order to control the body weight or any nutrient intake. An individual who is on a diet will carefully monitor what they eat, in order for them to cut down on any higher fat containing foods in order for them to lose any weight. (Google Books, 2015).
