Is a four day school week a good idea? Many school districts in the United States are starting to go to school only four days week. There are several reasons school districts use for going to a four day school week and there are several reasons why people think that this is a bad idea. Most states adhere to a school year of 180 days. In recent years states have allowed school districts to add hours to the school day to meet the instructional time that their states require. States have allowed public schools to make these changes because many states are broke or have to severely cut monies going to schools. Parents often use the extra day out for doctors and dentist’s appointments instead of allowing their child to be absent from school. Dropout rates are on the decrease too. Students often don’t feel as stressed in trying to keep up with their homework and possibly holding down a job. More high school students may be finishing high school because of a four day week. Most parents really like the four day week. Parents often like the idea of having an extra day with their children. With both parents often working family time is a premium. Students like the idea of having more time to complete those long homework projects or papers that teachers assign. Most students and their teachers like the four day week.
Many people believe that these kind of savings for schools will hurt the education of students more than it will help. American education is often said to be behind education in other countries. Some believe that students will not actually get the education that they need in a four day week. Another concern is that it is difficult to find child care for smaller children.
