When Marlene returned from her shopping spree, she had taken her last packages upstairs and went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee, the doorbell rang. “Now who could that be?” Looking out the bay window, she saw two well-dressed men standing on the porch, thinking they were salesmen, she opened the front door and asked, “May I help you?”
The detective flashed his badge, and said, “I’m Detective Raymond Johnson, my partner is Detective Gerald Wallace. We’re looking for Marlene Barnes.”
“I’m Marlene Barnes.”
“May we come in?” He asked.
“Of course,” Marlene said, leading the way to the family room, and asked, “Is anything wrong?”
“Is Katherine Lincoln your mother?” Detective Wallace asked, ignoring her question.
“Why?” She asked.
“Perhaps, you should sit down,” Detective Wallace said, motioning toward the sofa.

“This morning, a neighbor found a woman’s body behind her house and called 911. Several neighbors identified the victim as Katherine Lincoln. They gave us your name, address and said, Mrs. Lincoln is your mother. Is that correct?”
With her hands on the sides her face, Marlene screamed as her body shook, unable to speak, she wept uncontrollably. Finally, shaking her head, she whispered, “Katherine is my mother, but you’re wrong. She can’t be dead. I had dinner with her last night. She was fine.”
“She’s dead,” Detective Johnson
