A Nuclear Nightmare As the international political scene has grown increasingly complicated over the last 50 years, there have been few constants. One constant has been the United States’ perpetual involvement in the pursuit of global stability and safety. While some may question our specific interventionist policies, the fact remains that the United States occupies the position of mediator of the world. However, a new threat in the form of the Iran Nuclear Deal is looming, and The United Stated government will be directly accountable for the fallout it will produce if enacted. The Joint Plan of Action, if enacted, will be this catalyst and Iran will continue its long assumed role as an agent of discord among Middle Eastern states. When sanctions are lifted from Iran, the US Treasury department estimates that there will be a roughly 100 billion dollar windfall as Iran gains access to assets currently frozen by world powers. It takes only one vigorous stalking session of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s twitter to see the hatred he has for the United States and our primary ally in the region, Israel. These funds will allow Iran and its Ayatollah to indulge in one of their favorite pastimes, State Sponsored Terrorism relating to the destruction of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims the windfall will give Iran “hundreds of billions of dollars to fuel their terror and military regime.” As recently as 2014 The US State Department has published reports on Iranian support of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in their insurgency against Israel. This will only worsen with an Increase in Iranian resources. By passing this deal, the United States runs this risk of alienating Israel. Israel- in an ironic twist of geopolitics- is the one country that could aid the United States in combatting the madness that this agreement will create. The stipulations of the deal are so weak and favorable to Iran that NBC news reports that countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt may all attempt to acquire nuclear weapons as protection against Iran. A nuclear arms race in the Middle East would be a catastrophic occurrence. The only feeling would be that of terror. Terror as citizens see their regimes flaunt international law in pursuit of nuclear weapons. Terror as Israeli’s see a time where their own nuclear stockpile may be necessary.
