"America is united," President George W. Bush proclaimed a decade ago after the horror that terrorists wrought. Just Americans clinging to one another as they coped with the attacks on their freedom, their security, and their way of life. Some argue that through the acts of tragedy, and a common enemy, society, and individuals are able to relate to one and other and find a common ground. One of many examples that show how society unite as one are the effects of 9/11. It had united the people of this nation, because it motivated everyone to fight together against the common enemy of terrorism, and connected people emotionally because of the life taking actions of this tragedy. For example, in the article “Making the Future Better Together” by Eboo Patel, he states that “As a nation, we’ve spent the last several weeks trying to decipher the meaning of 9/11”(Patel 6). In this quote, Patel expresses how the effects of the tragedy presented, which was 9/11, was able to bring the nation together, because the people came together, and helped heal each other’s wounds. This demonstrates how people can unite as one because of an occurrence of a tragedy. In addition, in the poem “The Vietnam Wall” by Alberto Ríos, he writes “Little kids do not make the same noise. Here, junior high school boys don’t run or hold each other in headlocks”(Ríos 34). In this example, the author shows how no matter the age at the memorial, everyone acted mature and showed respect for people that they did not even know. This demonstrates how the tragedy represented in this example, which were the deaths of fallen soldiers, was able to connect people to one another because they were able to relate emotionally.
