93 Little Hobart Street, Welch, West Virginia, wasn’t a home or even a house to the Walls children. A more accurate description of their so-called living arrangements is hell. Living in this “house” was a family of six. Rose mary and Rex Walls and their four kids, Lori a 15 year old, Jeannette who is 12, Brian an 11 year old, and the youngest Maureen, who is 7 years old. The social worker asked several important questions on how their time at 93 Little Hobart Street was, and the conditions of their house. All four children proved the conditions were inhabitable. A bathroom as a bucket, so much mold, and no running water, were just some of the worst. All in all, this environment was not safe, healthy, and or habitable.

To kick off the interview with Lori, she is reassured everything she says, will be used to help prove her parents severe case of neglect towards their children. The first event shared was when she had nothing else available for her to eat but butter. A conversation then occured between Lori and her sister, Jeannette. Lori said, “Mix it with sugar. Tastes just like frosting.” (Walls 68) The fact that Lori treated this scenario as a normal everyday “meal”, goes to show how bad it really was. That is not only unhealthy and disgusting, but also very sad Lori had to result to butter as food. Another occurence of neglect is when Lori had used kerosene to start the fire in the house. Lori had open sores for forever. They were so severe she even had trouble sleeping under her blankets. (Walls 179) This event is very intense. Her father only told her once that this would happen, he failed to scold, or take away the kerosene like a good parent would have. Even after this happened, Rex and Rose could have corrected the situation, but they choose not to provide Lori with any medical care, that was obviously needed.
