The use of conditioning is a leading custom that is exemplified throughout the novel, A Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and is also a prevalent matter in our own lives. While the society described in the novel seems irrational, some aspects of conditioning are comparable to our lives. Often times, people are conditioned to living a certain way of life without realizing it. Many people are conditioned with the belief that in order to be successful, one has to go through many years of education and therefore have to follow specific guidelines in order to accomplish this. In our lives, there is an overarching system as to what is believed to be the best approach to life. Many people would agree that in order to be successful and happy, one must go through many years of rigorous schooling. We are told that we have to strive for the the highest grades, top scores on standardized tests, and get accepted to top colleges in order to have the best life possible. Achievement in American society is defined this way by many. Along with education, American society has conditioned many people to accept that one must have a certain physical makeup to be happy. Our culture often portrays people who are fit as happier than those who are not. From emaciated models in magazines, to selling tiny clothings sizes in many stores, we are bombarded by the idea of a perfect image constantly. One major effect of striving for the ideal body image has on our society, is plastic surgery. The fact that having the perfect body is so prevalent that different professions are now centered around achieving this image, speaks volumes about the impact this phenomenon has had on our society. This outlines how different methods of conditioning people to think or act in a certain behavior occurs in our lives
