Puritan code was very,very strict. Where Susanna English lived, there were plenty of proper puritan's, including her family. Her parents really wanted her to become a proper puritan, but she’s not. Will she change throughout the story? Or will she embrace herself? In the book “A Break With Charity” by Ann Rinaldi, we discover the of the people who live in Salem Town before, during, and after the Salem Witch Trials. Susanna English, the protagonist, before was not afraid of the witch trials because she did not think herself, or anyone she knew would be accused. But during the witch trials, her perspective started to change. She’s more appreciative to the family she has because she had almost lost them all, and she had realized the importance of family, friends, and anyone close to her.

But when it really hit her was when her very own family would be accused of witchcraft. She never would have thought this would ever happen to her. But when the police came to the door to arrest her mother of being “friends with witches” her fear became a reality. It had to be one “fearful event that had been weighing down on her for weeks, that had finally happened, and nothing could hurt her anymore” (pg 150.) This really was a big eye opener for Susanna because before, one of her good friends was accused but it didn’t really impact Susanna's life. It really didn’t hit her until her own mother was accused and sent to jail right in front of her very own eyes. She has changed tremendously from the beginning of the story because she now is more independent, she’s more appreciative for her family, and realizes to be more aware of what’s going on, because it could hurt her in the future if she’s not
