The field of health has been of interest to me since the age of three. Because of health challenges as a growing child, I became more inquisitive about the functioning of the human body. This stirred in me an interest to become a medical doctor, like many other children of my day. However, due to limited opportunities and resources, I found a career path in Microbiology. The field of Microbiology proved to have limitless opportunities for career development. I graduated and soon got a job where I became a Health and Safety Officer, although rarely working on humans. Over time, working as a Health and Safety Officer created a feeling of dissatisfaction that led me to pursue a career in Nursing. My decision to become a Nurse Practitioner is borne from experiences of the many struggles faced by most vulnerable groups in Canada, especially among immigrants. As a member of this group, I believe that my unique story can add a voice in advocating for better services to meet the needs of these populations. Also, with my knowledge and skills, I will be better equipped to provide greater support and resource to these populations especially in the area of health care. Hence, my current professional goals are to meet entry-level nursing competencies needed for my nursing licensure, build on my already acquired nursing skills, develop new nursing skills as appropriate, and pursue a post-graduate MN education in nursing leadership/education. I believe that to achieve and maximize my potential as a Nurse Practitioner, it is important to have grounded skills to advocate for my clients. While my undergraduate education has prepared me for this role, there is still more to learn particularly when one considers the responsibilities associated with the role of a Nurse Practitioner. Judging by my findings, I have come to the conclusion that your university provides me with the kind of resource, faculty, and mentorship needed to achieve my career plan. As an undergraduate, part of my scholarly focus was on immigrants’ health. In my final year of nursing school, I had an opportunity to choose and address a leadership issue; I devoted my energy to the health needs of immigrants in Canada. In this assignment, my partner and I wrote a scholarly paper on “barriers facing immigrants’ access to healthcare services in Canada.” From our findings, cost, language, and cultural factors played a great role in how immigrants accessed health services in Canada. In another assignment, I partnered with a different colleague to research the needs and interests of male immigrants in the Brandon area. Again, major needs identified by participants in this research were access to healthcare and gaining employment the fit their qualification. From the determinants of health, we know the role of employment and access to health services in determining the health of populations. We know that there is an observable gap between the health of most vulnerable groups and that of the general Canadian population. In my opinion, if these vulnerable groups are adequately and
