When people are talking about country music and rap music many people don’t associate them being alike, but in reality many of the thing the sing about are related in some way. Country music has been around a lot longer than rap. Country music started back in the 1920’s but didn’t become popular until the 1940’s when it was referred to as “hillbilly music”. On the other hand rap music didn’t become popular until the 1990’s to the early 2000’s. Even though these two genres have two completely different backgrounds they can be related in many different ways especially in the reasons they write their songs If you listen to country and rap music you will quickly realize that the majority of the songs are sung about the same things. Let’s start with rap music. Rap music has been growing in popularity since the 1980’s. According to a recent twitter study they found that rap is the most tweeted about genre around the world (Feeney). Rap music sends a strong message to the people that are listening to it, but perhaps sometimes the message is too strong and can have a negative effect on the society listening to it. Many people are influenced by rap, they try to imitate what they hear in the songs, which is usually about drugs, killing and derogatory statements towards women. Country music on the other hand is changing from singing about beer and women all the time to how they have changed someone’s life or accomplished a lifelong goal. These songs send a more positive message too people than rap does. While some country songs are still song about women and alcohol like rap music does many artist have gone away from that to try and send a more positive message.
