A Glass Menagerie is a play that is epic and tragic in which it is about a family which is unable to escape the reality of what was and is real life. The characters fragile state represents a symbol of how life can be easily severed. I did have sympathy towards the characters at first, but as I continued reading the play, my feelings changed, especially with Amanda. Amanda doesn’t seem to be able to manage modern society changing, neglecting her values as a southern belle and her constantly tormenting Tom took a toll on the family. She was complaining about not marrying a planter and having servants to wait on her, but instead she just settled with a telephone man who eventually left her. Amanda needs to get out of her fantasy life and become a role model and teach her children how to deal with everyday life. However, Amanda does try to make Laura more popular and more sociable so she can find a husband that will take care of her. Amanda is not a cruel person, but her flaws have made her a tragedy within her character of the play. The characters are all to blame for their own actions and each of the Wingfield’s struggles with despair and sorrow that threatens their lives. Tom is because of his attitude toward Amanda and Laura even though he cares for them; he is often very cruel toward them during the play. But in the end he deserts them both and not once during the play does he show any love or kindness toward Laura. Toward the end of the play when Tom and Amanda are discussing Laura he states that she is a hopeless peculiar person who cannot survive in the outside world.
