A Hero's Journey

Jared is a hero, but he pulls away from the traditional hero stereotypes. But, still goes through the stages of the hero’s journey. He doesn't have special powers, but, he persists through hard times and that is a really important trait for a hero. Jared lives up to his family reputation and helps out when Mrs. Anderson is in need of help. In the end, Jared has a change of heart because of his work with Mrs. Anderson. Jared follows the stages of the hero’s monomyth throughout his journey and his courageous actions in addition to his persistence, makes Jared a hero.

Anderson because he wanted to steal from her and he took advantage of her old age to take the car. But, these examples are only partially correct; Jared has persistence and it is one of the important traits for all heroes. Jared persisted and continued to work for Mrs. Anderson because he could see that she needed help. This happens in the beginning of his journey. Will Weaver writes, “See me mowing Mrs. Anderson’s lawn... See me inside her gloomy house, having my snack, politely munching a sugar cookie and sipping my iced tea” (41). This quote shows Jared working for almost a year for Mrs. Anderson gaining her trust and persisting through the work she has given him. Persistence is a really important trait for most people because they have to persist during hard times to be a hero.

In conclusion, Jared is a hero because he has the two most important traits of a hero, persistence and courage. Some people could say that Jared wasn’t a hero because his aim was to steal from Mrs. Anderson. But, because he is a hero, Jared did not steal from her in the beginning and persisted through her work she gave him. As Og Mandino once said, “I will persist until I succeed. Always will I take another step. If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult. I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking.”
